Why is My AC Running but Not Cooling?

Serving all of Greater Clark County & Portland-Metro Areas

A Portland homeowner pointing a remote control at their nonfunctional AC unit.

There are several potential reasons why your AC isn’t blowing cold air. These include a dirty air filter, refrigerant leaks, dirty condenser coils, issues with the compressor, and more. It’s best to fix any potential problems with your AC unit before the hot weather hits; even here in Vancouver WA, we see our fair share of hot days! That’s why the All Seasons Heating & Cooling, Inc. team is here to explain some of the most common problems with air conditioner units below.

Most Common AC Problems

Your AC is a complex system with a lot of parts that could break down or wear out. Keeping them all in good working order is important for ensuring your AC cools your home properly. If your system is on but not cooling the air, check for the following issues.

Incorrect Thermostat Settings

Before you panic about something being wrong with your AC system, check to make sure your thermostat settings are correct! Make sure it’s set to “auto” rather than “on.” If set to “on,” your AC will keep running without actually cooling. If all your settings seem correct, your thermostat could be faulty; this could be a simple fix, like changing the batteries, or could require a replacement of your entire thermostat system.

Clogged Air Filters

Your AC’s air filters need to be replaced frequently to keep things running smoothly. They filter allergens and other particles out of the air, and if they’re clogged up, your system will be less efficient. Changing your filters monthly while your AC is in use is recommended.

Frozen or Dirty Coils

Your AC system contains two types of coils: the evaporator coils and the condenser coils. The evaporator coils are responsible for absorbing heat from the air. If ice builds up on these coils, they can’t work properly. Ice buildup is usually a sign of a refrigerant issue.

Your condenser coils are responsible for transferring heat out of the home. They can get clogged up with debris from the outdoor air. Clearing obstructions around the condenser coils could solve the problem.

Low Refrigerant or Refrigerant Leaks

Your AC system uses liquid refrigerant to transfer heat from the indoors to the outdoors. If there is a leak somewhere along the line, or your refrigerant levels are low for any other reason, you may notice warm air from your AC. This can also contribute to ice formation on your evaporator coils.
